Drawn Literature in Aotearoa NZ: Contemporary perspectives / Littérature dessinée en Aotearoa - Nouvelle-Zélande: perspectives contemporaines
Notes and drawings from a conference about Aotearoa comics held in France, 22-23 May
The time difference between NZ and France is a bit awkward so I only caught the beginning of each day. Thanks to Lambert Barthélémy and Nelly Gillet at Montpellier University for organising such a cool programme.
My first drawing has Dylan Horrock’s key note (“Black River: a century of comics from Aotearoa New Zealand”), Tim Bollinger (“Looking for Hicksville – A personal journey in search of New Zealand comics”) and Matthew CAMPBELL DOWNES (“The culture of ‘music’ or ‘band’ comics”). All of their talks were quite visual so my notes are a bit sparse.
The next one has Neal Curtis (“Comics as the “Art of Fragments” in Di Morris’s The Writing Desk”), Jennifer Cheuk (“Making the Invisible, Visible: Visual Narratives and Material Texts in the Contemporary Asian New Zealand Diaspora”) and Shaun Craill (“An unexpected journey – there and back again” or the imperative for comic creators from Aotearoa to travel to find international success”).
Finally, the following is a panel with Ross Murray and Jem Yoshioka.
